Is Teeth Whitening
Right for You?

If you are exploring whitening your teeth then it is always best to begin with a visit to Toothville. We can advise you on whether you are a good candidate for teeth whitening. Those with yellowish stained teeth typically have better results than those with brownish or greyish hues. Also, keep in mind that teeth whitening has no effect on tooth-colored composite fillings, porcelain crowns or teeth that are bonded, so whitening will only make these teeth stand out from the ones that can be whitened.

Are Toothville Take Home Whitening Kits
More Effective than At-Home Whitening Products?

The professional whitening take-home kits that we offer at Toothville Family Dentistry takes approximately 15 minutes. After proper use, our clients have found results in as little as a few days. After ensuring that your gums and lips are protected, leaving only the teeth exposed, a bleaching agent made up of hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth and it does all the work!

Our office also dispenses take-home kits along with a custom-made mouthpieces so you can continue to whiten your teeth. These 10% carbamide peroxide (the bleaching agent) gels are generally used for two weeks in order to obtain the desired results. After the teeth whitening process is complete, you can continue to use these custom trays to touch up your whitening!

Keep in mind that the over-the-counter whitening kits also contain carbamide peroxide, but you won’t get the custom-fitted mouthpiece, and your saliva tends to weaken the effectiveness of the gel and the level of peroxide used in over-counter kits is not as strong as supplied by your dentist.

Are There Any Side Effects to
Tooth Whitening?

Some people may experience sensitive teeth after using these bleaching agents. This is usually temporary and goes away after completion of the whitening process. Others can notice irritation of their gums – especially when using generic bleaching trays, not the custom made ones that we provide you with. This sensitivity can be because the gums can come in contact with the bleaching agent.

If you are experiencing side effects, you should always bring thee to our attention. This way we can advise you on whether they what you are experiencing is typical or not.

Can I go Overboard on
Tooth Whitening?

The answer to this is a solid yes! We know that bleaching can become addictive for some people who never feel that their teeth are white enough! This can become dangerous because too much exposure to peroxide solution may cause the tooth enamel to appear translucent and increase your teeth and gum sensitivity and irritation.

So our advice is always to be safe and know when to say when. We always recommend that you have whitened your teeth enough when  the colour of your teeth match the whites of your eyes!
