Wisdom Tooth Removal

Your NW Calgary Choice for
Wisdom Teeth Removal!

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars in the mouth. Most people get these in their late teenage years or early twenties. If they come in properly aligned and healthy, wisdom teeth do not cause a problem. For the vast majority, however, this is not usually the case. Wisdom teeth often erupt misaligned, horizontal, or angled. For many, there is simply not enough room to accommodate so wisdom tooth removal is required. Toothville Family Dentistry is pleased to offer wisdom teeth removal.

What are
Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are a third and extra set of molars in the back of the mouth, on the top and bottom. They usually come in between the ages of 17-25. They can grow in and cause no problems at all, or they can grow in at strange angles and cause issues. If they cause issues, your dentist will recommend their removal.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Your dentist will make a recommendation about whether wisdom teeth should be removed or not, based on your examination and x-rays. Wisdom teeth are removed for various reasons:

  • Crowding of teeth – sometimes your jaw has no room for an extra set of molars
  • They are impacted – impacted wisdom teeth are the most common reason for removal. Impaction of a tooth occurs when there is insufficient space in the dental arch for proper eruption, and its growth is affected by gum, bone, or another tooth.
  • A wisdom tooth becoming stuck in the jaw causing gum disease. Sometimes a wisdom tooth erupts only partially in the mouth. It can become trapped in your jawbone or bums, which can be painful and may pose a risk for potential infection.
  • Tooth decay in the wisdom teeth (which are harder to clean)

When Should I
Get My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Oral surgery is easier on younger patients. The bones are not as dense, and the roots of the wisdom teeth are not as established. X-rays can help dentists predict if wisdom teeth will cause a problem, even before they have erupted.

What is the
Wisdom Teeth Extraction Process?

First, a consultation is required to discuss the need for wisdom teeth extraction. Some people need teeth extracted right away to prevent the growth of wisdom teeth from disrupting other teeth, and others don’t need any teeth extracted at all. Our dentists will review your medical history and discuss sedation options, depending on the amount of surgery required. After surgery, you will have a follow-up appointment 2-3 weeks later to make sure the mouth is healing properly.

What to Expect
After Surgery?

Most people have mild discomfort and swelling for a few days and your mouth may need a few weeks to heal completely. After surgery, be sure to:

  • Use an ice pack to curb swelling
  • Eat soft foods for a few days
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Take any medications prescribed by your doctor or dentist
  • You can start brushing your teeth the second day
  • Don’t drink through a straw
  • Don’t rinse too harshly or eat hard, crunchy, or sticky foods
  • Don’t smoke
