What is the
Inlay and Onlay?
Inlays and Onlays are used to repair decay on the chewing surfaces of your rear teeth (molars). They can also be used to repair teeth that don’t have enough damage to apply a crown.
The inlay is similar to a filling but is typically used when the cavity is too large for a simple filling. While a filling is filled with filling material, the inlay is filled with a single, solid piece that is usually fabricated in a lab. The Onlay is more than an inlay, but not quite a crown. It covers a cusp of the tooth (while the inlay only fills the areas between the cusps), and like the inlay, is fabricated as a single, solid piece. It is fabricated to the exact size and shape of the space to be covered.
Inlays and Onlays are made from tooth-coloured porcelain, composite resin, or even gold. Inlays are custom-fitted to repair decay or damage in the ridges of the teeth. Onlays, also custom-fitted, are used to repair decay and damage that occurs on more than one cusp (point) of the tooth. Each tooth has four points or cusps.
Inlays and Onlays look very natural, so no one even knows they’re not your real teeth! They are also strong and durable – necessary qualities for those busy back molars!
