What is a
Root Canal?

A root canal is performed in order to save a tooth from extraction. In very simple terms, when a tooth becomes diseased, a root canal is performed to remove infected tissue from the roots of a tooth below your gum. We do this to:

  • Save the tooth structure above the gumline
  • Reduce any further risk of damage
  • We do this to prevent the loss of the tooth. This possibly saves you from more expensive and extensive treatment

Why would you need a root canal?

  • Severe toothache or pain when chewing
  • Lingering pain after drinking hot or cold beverages
  • Constant, dull, throbbing pain
  • Tenderness when biting
  • Tenderness and swelling around the gums
  • An abscess (pimple-like swelling) at the gums, possibly with the presence of pus
  • Difficulty sleeping as a result of pain, and/or pain that wakes you up at night

What is involved in a Root Canal Procedure?

Depending on the severity of your infection, Dr. El Gamal may prescribe an antibiotic for the infection before performing the actual root canal procedure.

Your root canal treatment begins with the administration of a local anesthetic. Next, Dr. El Gamal will remove the infected or damaged nerve tissue and treat any remaining infection. The root of the tooth is then packed with a filling material. Finally, your tooth is capped with a dental crown to protect it. This helps support the tooth because it may be experiencing damage or instability due to the infection.

The entire process may take place over multiple visits.

Will a Root
Canal Hurt?

With advanced technology and the general growth of the practice of dentistry, root canals are far less painful than root canals of the past. There is very minimal discomfort to the patient. Root Canals have definitely come a long way from the painful ways of its past. Today, root canal therapy is no more painful than getting a tooth filled. In fact, the purpose of a root canal is to relieve pain, not cause it! And save your tooth.

For the first few days after treatment, your tooth may feel sensitive, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure. This discomfort can be relieved with over-the-counter or prescription medications. Post-operative treatment of possible pain is something that you and your dentist will discuss.

Your tooth may continue to feel slightly different from your other teeth for some time after your endodontic treatment is completed. However, as with any dental treatment, if you have severe or persistent pain or pressure, call our office!

At Toothville Family Dentistry, if you are pain, we feel there is no need to put off treatment. We are here to help you get out of pain fast!
